FAQ

Can I insulate my attic with Eurothane?

Recticel Insulation offers a lot of possibilities for insulating your attic. All our products have the certificates required to be eligible for premiums or fiscal benefits. Depending on the use Eurofloor, Eurothane G or Eurowall may be chosen combined with a finishing layer. The various options can be viewed in more detail on the next page.

Can decorative plasterwork (crepe plaster) be applied directly on Eurowall?

Eurowall cannot be used for this.

Where can I buy PUR/PIR insulation from Recticel Insulation?

The Recticel Insulation products are on sale via a network of dealers. You can enter the product you want and the region under the 'dealers' section and a list will appear of all the distributors in your region. You can always contact them for prices or a quote.

What is the maximum temperature resistance of EUROTHANE PUR/PIR building insulation?

PUR - polyurethane for building applications withstands a maximum temperature of +100°C; PIR – polyisocyanurate foam insulation however withstands + 130 to 150 °C.
However higher temperatures can be withstood for a brief time when using the foam – for instance the adhesion of roof insulation boards Bi3 with hot bitumen.

Does EUROTHANE insulation absorb water?

All Eurothane products have ATG/H product certification and usually also ATG system approval. The product characteristics are inspected continuously within the framework of these approvals. PUR insulation has over 90% closed cells which allows a very limited water absorption. The water absorption measured after complete immersion of the foam for 24 hours is limited to 2 to 3%. The presence of an aluminium or bituminous facing on the Eurothane insulation boards offers an additional protection against damp.

How does PUR stand out from other synthetic foams like XPS?

Eurothane PUR insulation products are produced according to a continuous system based on liquid raw materials. A facing is already required during the production process to make it possible to spread the liquid compound. The facing also contributes to the stability and functionality of the product, i.e. the type of facing may differ depending on the application.
PUR insulation for building applications is consequently always equipped with a facing on both sides; the foam is light yellow, however XPS has no facings and has usually a different colour.

Why are some insulation materials thicker than others?

An insulation material is characterised by its physical characteristic "λ- value". The lower this value the better thermal insulation the material provides.
Insulation materials with a higher "λ- value", need a more important thickness to achieve a defined thermal resistance or insulation capacity than an insulation board with lower "λ- value”.

Is it not the case that thick layers of insulation insulate better than thin ones?

The answer to this is actually included in the previous FAQ. An exact comparison is only possible after defining the thermal resistance of each insulation type and thickness. The thickness alone is not a criterion for assessing the insulation capacity of the various insulation types and thicknesses.

What are Eurothane, Powerdeck and Powerline boards made from?

Eurothane insulation boards are synthetic insulation boards based on polyurethane foam, also called PUR.

Powerdeck, Powerline are insulation materials on the basis of Taufoam by Recticel - a very special polyisocyanurate foam – also called PIR.
They are obtained through simultaneous chemical reactions and a physical reaction (expansion of a blowing agent).

The Eurothane, Powerdeck and Powerline products are produced according to a continuous production system and have facings on both sides.

How environmentally-friendly is the production of Eurothane boards and how environmentally sound are the boards?

No CFCs are used in the production of Eurothane. Recticel Insulation has actively contributed to the development of the CFC-free production of PUR insulation boards. For that reason Recticel Insulation was even awarded the "First Prize" Environmental Award for Industry in 1994 for the production of "CFC-11 free" insulation panels.

Environmental awareness goes further than solely not using CFCs. Eurothane insulation boards have a very high insulating capacity (very low -value) and this contributes to major energy savings. As a result, the emission of flue gas from heating installations is much lower, which contributes to improving the environment.

How fire safe are Powerdeck and Powerline boards?

Powerdeck and Powerline are products based on Taufoam by Recticel = a highly specialised PIR foam, with excellent fire resistant behaviour. These products not only achieve good fire reactions in small-scale tests such as A1 (according to R.D. 19.12.1997) but they also stand out from other synthetic foams in large-scale tests.
The renowned Factory Mutual Institute in America tested Powerdeck in actual roof constructions. The findings were exceptional and Powerdeck has consequently been given an FM Approval Class1 (best classification for fire resistant behaviour) for various roof constructions.
The excellent behaviour of Powerdeck, Powerline in these large-scale tests make it absolutely clear that these products do not contribute to the spreading of the fire and also stand out completely here from other synthetic foams which also achieve an A1 fire reaction in small-scale tests.

Are there Eurothane boards with sound insulating characteristics?

All insulation boards in the Eurothane/ Powerdeck range belong to the hard foam insulation board family based on PUR or PIR.
These are primarily thermal insulation boards and not directly intended to solve an acoustic problem.
However, in addition to hard foam Recticel also produces soft foams e.g. for use in the comfort sector. A number of products derived for construction have been developed from this such as Recphone and Recfoam. Recphone is recommended as an acoustic underlay carpet for loose parquet floors; Recfoam is an acoustic absorbing material for floors and walls.

What is the difference between "K" value and "k" value?

The k-value, also called the U-value, is the heat transmission quotient of a wall element. The K (capital K) is the global insulation level of a house or building.

What are the main tips for installing Eurothane products correctly?

· Use the right Eurothane board for the application: the right type and the right format.
· Store the boards in a dry place and above the ground and use them when they are dry.
· Handle the boards carefully, do not throw them, be careful not to damage them and do not kick them with your feet.
· Ensure that the base is clean, even, dry and smooth.
· Especially with flat roofs apply an air screen, sealing layer or damp resistant layer if necessary.
· Push the insulation boards together well.
· Always cover the boards at the end of the working day and keep them dry during rain showers.
· Always follow the installation instructions on the packaging.
· Always use the right attachment methods.

How do Eurothane boards behave in humid environments?

The damp absorption of Eurothane is almost non-existent. The Eurothane products are also tested for damp absorption as part of the ATG inspection. After complete immersion under water for 24 hours the water absorption is limited to a couple of %.
In practice this situation does not occur; on the other hand the majority of Eurothane products are faced on both sides with a facing that absorbs little to no damp (e.g. aluminium film).
This means that Eurothane products can often be used even in less favourable weather conditions and do not contribute to sealing in extra damp in a construction.

What about 'over-insulation’?

The term 'insulation’ is not only used in everyday language for 'thermal’ insulation but also for the airtight sealing of cracks and fissures. 'Over-insulation' consequently means the completely air-tight sealing of a construction, without taking account of the need for building ventilation. If the indoor climate in a building is to be kept at a healthy level, then the ventilation is crucial, even with 'thermally’ well-insulated constructions.

Which side of the Eurowall board should face towards the cavity wall?

The matt side is alkaline resistant and must be placed against the inside cavity wall area. The glossy side is consequently placed facing towards the cavity wall.

Is it essential to tape the Eurowall seams?

Taping the seams is certainly not essential but it is advisable. This increases the wind-proofing. Rectitape is extremely suitable for this.

Why is Eurowall sometimes installed in two layers?

A two-layer system offers the advantage that the first layer is covered by the second layer of Eurowall. There is no obligation to install a two-layer system because luckily Eurowall already has a tongue and groove system which only further improves the air tightness.

Can I insulate the outside of my existing wall with Eurothane?

Absolutely! To limit cold bridges it is especially important to install your insulation as a continuous insulation shield. For that reason it is recommended to install insulation across the entire wall area.
The bearing structure can be defined afterwards using an adjustment screw. The exterior finishing is placed on the bearing structure. This may be: sidings, panels, tiles,...

Why use a partial cavity filler with Eurowall?

Hard insulation boards, and Eurowall in particular, insulate better than mineral wools. The required insulation value can be achieved with a limited thickness with Eurowall, whereby with the usual dimensions of the external wall construction a cavity wall is always maintained between the insulation and the external cavity area. As a result the cavity wall function is retained in full.

Why Eurowall instead of XPS?

Eurowall has a very low λ-value (= high insulation value) and high stability. For the same insulation value a smaller thickness may be used with Eurowall.

Can interior insulation be installed with plastering?

For interior insulation Eurothane G may be used. A PUR-board in which a plasterboard sheet and damp screen is already integrated. This can then be painted or wallpapered. The finishing is realised as for traditional plasterboard.

How can Eurothane G boards be fixed, when renovating an existing home?

Two methods are possible for fixing Eurothane G; namely fixing them to a wooden structure and fixing them with adhesive plaster. The choice is primarily defined by the type of base. For ceilings and partition wall cladding a mechanical attachment on a wooden structure should be chosen, for use on walls the adhesive system is also possible as long as the existing wall or partition is compatible with adhesive plaster and the wall or partition does not have any major unevenness. In the latter case a wooden structure is recommended for smoothing the area out.
More details are given on the data sheet of Eurothane G.

Is Eurothane G available with a vapour barrier?

This panel is equipped with a vapour barrier, as standard, between the PUR-core and the plasterboard.

Is Eurothane G available with water-resistant plasterboard?

Eurothane G is exclusively made with standard plasterboard; it is consequently not suitable for use in wet rooms.

Are the insulation boards from Eurothane or Powerdeck boards sufficiently pressure resistant to be used in terraces?

Both Eurothane and Powerdeck roof insulation boards are suitable for this use. These boards have a UEAtc- class C. This means that these boards may be used for frequent maintenance and for use in roof terraces.

We would like to insulate an existing flat roof thermally and improve the drainage. Is this possible with Eurothane?

Eurothane Bi3A is a roof insulation board with a variable thickness in length. This makes it possible to realise thermal insulation and slope in a single phase.
Recticel Insulation provides its service for this by working out a roof plan in advance which means that the method is not only defined but the correct number of boards can also be established.

Is pitch or slope insulation Eurothane Bi3A an economic system?

Eurothane Bi3A is a light yet extremely strong insulating board. This tapered system consequently allows you to achieve a high level of insulation combined with a "dry" tapered system. For that reason it is extremely suitable for the renovation of roofs where extra weight must be limited and sealing in damp must be prevented.

Wat is het verschil tussen Eurothane Bi-4 en Eurothane Bi-3?

Eurothane BI4 heeft een betere isolatiewaarde (= 0,026 W/mK), en is bovendien gemakkelijker te plaatsen.
